Where To

GO FOR AN ECO ADVENTURE WITHOUT TRAVELING OUTSIDE YOUR CITY
By Pamela Peeters

Remember when the West Side Highway bike lane in New York looked like a concrete Bohemian art project? This is before the High Line became a Babylonian garden, thirty feet up in the air – and before the much anticipated (and, by some, heavily critiqued) bike-lane expansion. Hundreds of people now commute from home to office and back while pedaling along the waterfront and smelling a fresh sea breeze. It used to be different.

In the twelve years since my arrival in New York, "going green" has evolved from ordering a salad to being environmentally conscious. The change has generated billions of dollars, (as in the Whole Foods success story ). Before The Inconvenient Truth, the documentary by Al Gore, a majority of people saw Mother Earth’s resources as simply an abundance – the gift that kept on giving. Now we know that the reserves of forests and fresh drinking water are finite.

At Sustainable Styles, you can discover our sustainable lifestyle choices in a real-time setting. We start our explorations with New York City, as you have never seen it before – mindfully and engaged..
